Police and students clash at Honduras university
Tegucigalpa, Honduras - Supporters of Manuel Zelaya, the deposed Honduran president, and security forces clashed Wednesday in the capital, Tegucigalpa.
Police were attempting to end a protest by students at the state-owned National Autonomous University of Honduras.
The students were demanding the return to power of Zelaya, who was removed from power in a bloodless June 28 coup.
Demonstrators threw stones at police, who responded with tear gas and water cannon, local media reported.
There were no details on the number injured in the clashes.
Although Zelaya has the backing of the Organization of American States as the legitimate head of state of Honduras, his reinstatement after being deposed and sent into exile has remained in limbo.
Zelaya has rejected a compromise offered by mediator Costa Rican President Oscar Arias because it would also forbid him from seeking a constitutional change that would allow him to run for re-election - the very effort that got him kicked out of his country in the first place.
Meanwhile, the post-coup government headed by Roberto Micheletti has also remained steadfast in its rejection of the compromise, charging Monday that Zelaya was inciting violence and preparing an armed return home. Micheletti's government has threatened to arrest Zelaya if he returns and to prosecute him for violating the Honduran constitution.
Zelaya has tried twice to return to Honduras, once by air, once on foot, but was rebuffed both times.
Regular protests have been held by Zelaya's supporters since his ouster. At least one person, a teacher, has been killed in them. (dpa)
