Pluto Not just a body but whole system of world: Scientists

Scientists shared that Pluto is not just a body, but a whole system of worlds. Not only Charon, there are four more moons though smaller in size of Pluto. These tiny moons like Charon, orbit around the system’s center of mass.

The other moons are called Styx, Nix, Kerberos and Hydra. The orbit looks like a small solar system. Scientists said that the smaller moons are present less than around 30 miles. Nix and Hydra were discovered in 2005.

Styx and Kerberos were found in 2011 and 2012. New Horizons has clicked many images of Nix and Hydra and also of Styx and Kerberos. Out of all, Nix is the second-largest of Pluto’s small moons and was the closest to New Horizons during its flyby.

Experts said that they have seen Nix through Hubble Space Telescope and with New Horizons and it has been found that its brightness keeps on changing over time. There is a big crater present on Nix and it appears to be of a different color in comparison to the rest of the moon. Nix does not have any atmosphere, said experts.

Hew Horizons has imaged Hydra as well, but during the flyby it was at the opposite side. Experts said that Hyda has much more complex shape than Nix and looks a bigger version of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. There is a possibility that Hydra is the result of a low-speed collision of two older moons.

“Who would have expected a blue sky in the Kuiper Belt? It’s gorgeous,” Alan Stern, the principal scientist for New Horizons, said in a NASA release about the latest images.
