PGI Doctors Call Off Their Strike
After getting an assurance from the PGI administration, the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) had called off its indefinite strike on Monday evening.
With this, nearly 800 resident doctors have come back to their work.
Earlier, in the morning over 200 resident doctors assembled outside the director’s office. After two rounds of talks with the dean and sub-dean, consensus was reached at in the evening.
The controversy triggered off after senior resident Dr Sanand Kumar was allegedly assaulted and abused by Dr Santhosh, assistant professor of the same department, last Wednesday, in front of operation theatre staff and technicians. The matter was then reported to the head of the department and the director, PGI.
Following an assault on Dr Sanand, the PGI administration had given a direction to “restrict” the participation of Dr Santosh, assistant professor, in academics and other activities of the institute.
Speaking on this, a senior resident doctor said, “The administration has given verbal assurance to restrict his involvement in the PGI activities.”
The PGI administration had issued a notice of no work, no pay to all resident doctors. "A notice was issued to the residents who were on strike for no work no pay," said AK Gupta, deputy director, administration.
Due to the doctor’s strike, patient care services were badly hit in some departments of the PGI. However, the emergency and ICU services were functioning normally.
