WTO chief Pascal Lamy: Protectionism is on the rise Geneva  - Since the beginning of the year, countries around the world have been implementing protectionist measures, World Trade Organization Director General Pascal Lamy said Thursday, warning that this could have a negative impact on trade.

Lamy, in a report to WTO members, said he specifically noted increases in tariffs, non-tariff measures, and anti-dumping actions.

Pascal LamyWellington  - The director-general of the World Trade Organisation, Pascal Lamy, has rejected the "food miles" campaign of some European farmers who say consumers should buy local produce instead of imported foods, according to a news report on Friday.

Their argument says buying food from countries like New Zealand is environmentally unfriendly because of the carbon emissions involved in transporting it to consumers over long distances.

During his two-day visit, Lamy will also hold talks with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath, and also with representatives of the Indian industry.
