Captors set new deadline for UN hostage in Pakistan

Pakistan mapIslamabad - The United Nations Monday made a fresh appeal for the release of its official, John Solecki, who is being held by Baloch separatists in south-west Pakistan, a day after his captors threatened to kill him if the government did not release more than 1,100 prisoners in four days, officials and media reports said.

"We keep appealing for the immediate and safe release of Mr Solecki," said UN spokeswoman Maki Shinohara, while confirming that the world organization had learned about the deadline.

The Balochistan Liberation United Front, the group that claimed responsibility for the abduction, have sent a letter to a news agency in Quetta warning that Solecki would be killed if their demands are not met.

"If our demands are not met, then we will kill him, and state agencies will be responsible for it," the group said in the letter.

A statement issued by the organization here asked the kidnappers to contact the UN, if not directly, then through a `trusted intermediary', The Dawn reports.

Solecki was abducted from Quetta on Monday (February 2) following an ambush in which his driver was killed.
