Melbourne, Dec 27: The Australian Police has praised cricket spectators after a relatively incident-free first day of the Boxing Day Test.

About 50 people were ejected before tea and most had been shown the door before they even got through it, The Herald Sun reported.

Patrons who tried to smuggle in alcohol were one of the biggest problems as bumper crowds poured in. People caught with concealed bottles were ejected and fined.

"Some have been arrested for being drunk, some for breaching the rules about bringing alcohol into the ground and some other behaviour issues," Supt Stephen Leane said.

"The behaviour of the crowd has been pretty good. The majority of the crowd have come to enjoy themselves and they have been doing that," he added.

He said the message not to start Mexican waves was also getting through.

"There have been a few waves but thankfully nothing has been thrown in the air and that's the real issue - people injuring each other or injuring other people," he said.

"We've only had a few flare-ups in violence and we've taken care of that fairly quickly . . . so far, so good," Supt Leane said. (ANI)
