Origin of Meat will be a Mystery Now
On Monday, World Trade Organization ruled that label 'country of origin' on packaged steaks and other cuts of red meat in the US could put Mexican and Canadian livestock at a disadvantage. Currently, the label on packages of steaks and some other kinds of meats showed where the animals were born and slaughtered.
The labels of meat were once revised by the government of the United States. The labels were revised by the Obama administration to try to comply with previous rulings of the World Trade Organization in favor of Mexico and Canada. Tom Vilsack, who is Agriculture Secretary, said, "Now the revised labels have also been struck down. Congress will have to change the law to avoid retaliation - such as extra tariffs - from the two neighbor countries".
After the decision, Vilsack said that Congress has to fix the problem. According to Vilsack, the Congress has either to cancel or modify and amend it. The ruling went against the United States, but it was a victory for the meat industry of the country. After the decision, the United States meat processors quickly demanded for a cancel of the labeling laws.
After the decision by the World Trade Organization, Mexico and Canada released a joint statement where they called on the United States to cancel the labeling rules. Mexico and Canada stated that they are seeking authorization from the World Trade Organization to take the measures against United States exports.
In the joint statement, Canadian and Mexican agriculture and trade officials stated that the rules could cause livestock and meat of Canada and Mexico to be kept apart from the meat of the United States origin. As per the reports, the process of segregate is costly that forced companies in the US to stop buying from other countries.
