One more Arrested in Nun Rape Case

One more person was arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a nun in Orissa's riot-hit Kandhamal district on Saturday.

The accused Gajendra Digal was arrested last night from the locality of K Nuagaon area where the nun was allegedly raped.

The 29-year-old catholic nun was allegedly raped during Orissa bandh on August 25.

With this arrest, the total number of arrested persons rose to nine. Out of them, Crime Branch had arrested five persons in Kandhamal district, three others were nabbed in Kerala, but the nun remains untraced.

Director General of Police Manmohan Praharaj had claimed that the main accused was among the arrested persons, though none of them have so far confessed the crime.

The police have recorded the statement of eight arrested youth under Section 161 of the CrPC and sought permission from the court to register their version under Section 164 of the CrPC.

The Arch-Bishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Raphael Cheenath has moved the Supreme Court seeking direction to hand over the case to CBI as the victim did not have faith on the police in Orissa. Supreme Court will hear the petition on next Tuesday. The Court has ordered the State Govt. to file an affidavit on nun rape case.  Earlier the catholic nun had written a letter to Orissa Govt. seeking CBI probe into the matter.
