Oiled Sea Mammals in SeaWorld San Diego to remain in Guarded Condition
Plains All-American pipeline oil spill near Refugio State Beach covered sea mammals with oil. The oiled mammals were taken to Sea World San Diego.
On Monday, park officials affirmed that these mammals continue to remain in guarded condition. At the park's Oiled Wildlife Care Center, six sea lions and two elephant seals are receiving care. Two sea lion and two dolphins died after they were brought to SeaWorld.
Meanwhile, rescue effort is also taking place in Santa Barbara County. Three members from the park's animal rescue team are in the county to help in the rescue effort. Generally, Refugio State Beach is full of visitors, but this time, a number of cleanup crews are present.
The crews have been working tirelessly to ensure that no drop of oil remains that led to the closing of the beach and nearby El Captain State Beach. Soon, around 300 workers will be working with the paid crews on the rescue mission.
The volunteers have received training on how to remove the oil properly from the beach. The first set of volunteers will come for help either on Wednesday or Thursday.
"They will be cleaning rocks with different kinds of methods. Then the next method after that is how to get at the deeper, harder-to-get oil, and we have to do it in a way that is mindful of biological concerns", stated Yvonne Addassi with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Volunteers were of the view that they want to help clean the beaches so that they can be opened as soon as possible. California State Parks officials said they are expecting beaches to open by June 4. But then also, it all depends on the cleanup and how it has been progressing.
