Nylabone recalls Puppy Starter Kit dog chews over Salmonella risk

Nylabone, manufacturer of dog treats and toys, has announced to recall one of its products over the possible risk of Salmonella, a genus of bacteria of the Enterobacteriaceae family. The recalled product is Puppy Starter Kit dog chews.

While confirming the recall, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that the product of the company could be contaminated with salmonella bacteria. The recalled kit contains one lot of dog chews.

According to the company, the recall covers a lot of 1.69-ounce Puppy Starter Kit which is marked with ‘Lot #21935, UPC 0-18214-81291-3’. The product’s expiry date is March 22, 2018, the company stated.

According to reports, the presence of Salmonella bacteria in that lot was revealed during a routine testing. The lot was distributed nationwide and in Canada, the reports stated. Nylabone announced that both pets and humans handling the product could be at risk.

FDA, the federal agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, stated that until now, no illness has been reported in connection with the issue. According to the agency, Salmonella bacteria can cause diseases like fever, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue, decreased appetite and abdominal pain.

According to a news release, the contamination could result into muscle pain, arterial infections, arthritis, urinary tract symptoms, endocarditis and eye irritation. Salmonella can not only affect animals eating the product, but also humans who handle contaminated products. To eliminate the risk, an individual should wash hands after having contact with the product.

Nylabone also stated that any individual who bought the contaminated product can receive a full refund by returning it to the place of purchase. The company has urged people not to use the contaminated products.
