Nurse adopts newborn after Mother dies of Ebola

Ebola has killed many people in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and many other regions. Many people lost their beloved ones in the battle against the outbreak. One among them was a 19-year-old mother who arrived at the Ebola holding center with her newborn. The mother narrated her heart-melting story to everyone. Her husband was gone and she was also dying.

The 25-year-old nurse Donnell Tholley heard the woman’s sad story. Before leaving the place, Tholley asked the baby’s name and the mother replied faintly, ‘Bobo’. He also gave his phone to the woman.

After some days, he received a call from a nurse who informed Tholley about the health of the woman, Fatu Turay. After reaching the treatment center, Tholley found that the woman had died.

After knowing that Baby Turay has no one to look after, Tholley made his mind to do something for the little soul. He asked his mother if he could be the father of Baby Turay. Tholley’s family supported him and allowed him to adopt the baby. In January this year, the 6-week-old baby was brought to Tholley’s family home in Freetown.

Josephine Kadie Bangura, Tholley’s mother, said, “He had been crying so long at the hospital that at first he would open his mouth to cry and no sound would come out”.

When Tholley adopted the baby, there were no adoption lawyers. He and his family are carefully keeping the only proof of their story about the adoption. They have a piece of paper where a nurse from the hospital has written the names of all those people and nurses who witnessed the baby's arrival at his new home.
