Nokia might release Linux powered low-end smartphones
According to recent reports, Nokia might be planning to release smartphones powered by the open source platform, Linux.
The news is surprising to many as Nokia has just distanced itself form a Linux based MeeGo platform. MeeGo is a combination of between Intel’s Moblin and Nokia's Maemo projects and was launched jointly by the two companies last year. There were aiming to create a multi-use OS based around Linux.
Nokia has now entered into an agreement with Microsoft and will soon start churning out devices powered by Windows Phone 7 software. The company had announced in February 2011 that will partner the software giant and produce devices powered by Microsoft’s platform instead of its own Symbian or MeeGo.
MeeGo didn't fit for Nokia because it didn't fit within its high-end smartphone plans, according to Elop and not because of secretive plans backed by Microsoft to target MeGoo and popularize its own platform.
Nokia move to Linux for low-end smartphones is because Symbian is no longer a viable contender against Linux. Linux has huge mobile usage and it ias not backed by ongoing development to incorporate latest technologies.
