Smriti Irani fake degree row: Delhi Court to pronounce order today

New Delhi [India], Oct. 18 : The Patiala House court is to pronounce its order in the fake degree case of former Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani today after the Election Commission submitted the required documents.

Section 125A of RPA deals with penalty for filing a false affidavit and entails a jail term of up to six months or a fine or both.

Metropolitan Magistrate Harvinder Singh reserved its order for today after the Election Commission filed the documents in a sealed cover relating to Irani's educational qualification submitted by her for contesting the 2004 general elections.

Irani had given information about her educational qualifications in affidavits to the Election Commission to contest various elections.

FS Jaishankar, DGMO to brief Parliament panel on surgical strikes

New Delhi [India], Oct. 18 : Top officials, including Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar and the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lt. Gen. Ranbir Singh will on Tuesday brief a panel of MPs on the surgical strikes conducted by the Indian Army across the Line of Control (LoC) on September 28.

A notice issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat said that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, headed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, is scheduled to meet today when it would be briefed on India-Pakistan relations with a specific reference to the recent surgical strikes.

The meeting assumes significance as the government had earlier expressed reservations over giving a briefing on the same topic to the Parliamentary Committee on Defence.

BJP 'selling' Lord Ram's name to win UP polls: Congress

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], Oct. 18 : The Congress on Tuesday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is selling the name of Lord Ram to siphon off a victory in the politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh.

Congress leader D.P. Singh said that the Congress has nothing to do with the BJP's plan of constructing the Ram museum.

"The Congress has nothing to do with the BJP constructing a museum there (Ayodhya), or the Samajwadi party organising things for the Ramayan mela. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is selling the name of Ram in the wake of coming UP polls," said Singh.

According to some reports, the BJP government is planning to build a Lord Rama museum in Ayodhya. Both, Lord Rama and Ayodhya, have a dominant influence in the politics of Uttar Pradesh.
