Bill Gates confident India can eradicate polio
The richest man in the world, Bill Gates, hopes that polio would be completely eradicated from India in a very short time. He expressed his commitment to fight the disease with the help of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He said that many countries are fighting against the deadly disease but it needs sound will power to completely eradicate polio from the world.
He said that the nation of 1.1 billion people, India is making good efforts to eradicate it with support from government and non profit making organizations. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation would extend all kind of support to government for early eradication of the disease.
India recorded 496 cases of polio this year as per the reports of World Health Organization. Some impoverished states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are still under risk of polio due to poor health facilities and bad economic situation of people.
Recent monsoon has made immunization drives more difficult in isolated areas. Polio, generally attacks children of age 5 years and below causing paralysis, muscular atrophy, deformation and sometimes death.
India immunized 172 million children against the disease and Gates Foundation has spent $400 million worldwide in polio eradication efforts. The foundation is further committed to root out the disease.
