Islamabad, Nov 23: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has still not made up her mind on whether to accept the opposition’s demand to boycott the January 8 elections, despite of strong opposition within her Pakistan People’s Party for this proposition, a media report has claimed.

A majority in the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) had opposed the election boycott in its November 20 meeting, with a few key leaders favouring the idea, the Daily Times quoted sources, as saying.

Those favouring the boycott said that the opposition must unite and force President General Pervez Musharraf to quit from his two offices, sources added.

Though the party is still unsure of its final decision, it has asked its candidates to file nomination papers for the elections.

“Benazir is likely to put her weight behind the majority and lead the party into elections,” the sources said.

“The PPP is in a catch-22 position. Its credibility will come under question if it does not boycott the election with the opposition. However, if it joins the opposition, it could annoy some ‘foreign friends’. Even if it contests the elections without the opposition’s support, it has to ally itself with the PML or Maulana Fazlur Rehman to form a government. This in itself will be difficult,” they added.
