Lebanese hopes run high of a Nasrallah-Hariri fence-mending meeting
Beirut - A Hezbollah delegation is due to hold a meeting with anti-Syrian ruling majority Saad Hariri at the latter's home in Beirut in the coming 24 hours to try to mend fences between the two sides, a source close to Hezbollah said.
"The aim of the meeting is to invite Hariri to meet with the movement's Secretary General Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah," said the source who requested anonymity.
Sources close to Hariri confirmed that a meeting was due to take place "soon" between Hariri and Nasrallah. It would be "a gift to all the Lebanese Muslims at the end of the holy month of Ramadan", is due to end by September 30.
Rival supporters the Shiite movement Hezbollah and Hariri's Sunni movement Future have clashed on several occasions in the streets of Beirut and in northern Lebanon.
The most serious clashes took place in May in the capital and led Hezbollah taking over most of the city in few hours.
Hopes were high that the announcement of a meeting would mark the start of real dialogue between Lebanon's anti-Syrian and pro-Syrian factions.
It comes three months after both sides signed a Qatar-brokered deal to tackle outstanding disagreements.
The Doha deal ended 18 months of political deadlock, and in July Lebanon's politicians reached an agreement on forming a government of national unity.
However, the Doha deal was quickly overshadowed by sectarian violence in Tripoli, which has left more than 40 killed and hundreds displaced. (dpa)
