Major Tech Titans Caught In Indian Gender Dispute

According to the law of India, determining the sex of the pre-born child is a crime. The reason is quite obvious. In the recent years, many instances of aborting the female feticides have come forward.

On Wednesday, Dr. Sabu Mathew George filed a complaint against search engines like Yahoo India, Google India and Microsoft Corporations as according to the petition by Mr George; these engines were illegally promoting techniques and products for selecting the sex of a child through advertising and links on their search engines.

Thus, they have been issued notices by the Supreme Court as they have failed to abide by India’s Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques Act (1994). The news was broken by an activist and a lawyer.

In a telephonic interview on Thursday, George said, “There is a premeditated attempt by these companies to aim at Indian users with advertisements that claim to help in the selection of a child’s sex.”

The law made by the Indian Constitution forbids determining the sex of the child before it is born as an initiative to fight against the widespread evil of abortion of girl child. Goerge while leading the campaign against the advertisements placed by the engines informed, “These companies are making a lot of money by doing highly targeted and selective advertising of these products. Our petition seeks to block these advertisements.”

In a statement, Sanjay Parikh, a lawyer who lodged the complaint said, “The court has issued a notice to Google, Microsoft and Yahoo asking them to reply to our petition.”

Google on the other hand to defend itself said that various elements go into managing ad program policy, including local legal requirements and user experience. It further said, “We review our policies regularly and make changes to keep them current and effective. We have not yet received the petition from the Supreme Court, but we take local laws extremely seriously and will review the petition carefully.”

If we search for “sex selection”, there is no return of text ads on Google India, but the same search returns with 63 sponsored links on Google.com. Likewise, Yahoo India also returns with no links with these key words. On the other hand, a Microsoft Search conducted through MSN India offered two search ads with the information about gender selection. However, Yahoo and Microsoft were not available for comments.
