Polish President Lech Kaczynski lays Lisbon Treaty ratification on ice

Warsaw - Polish President Lech Kaczynski has said in an interview in Tuesday's Dziennik newspaper that he plans not to go ahead with ratification of the EU's Reform Treaty following Ireland's rejection of the document in a referendum last month.

"At the moment the question of the treaty is pointless," he said.

It was difficult to see how the treaty process could conclude, he added.

Kaczynski said that it was flippant to say the EU could not exist without the treaty, also known as the Lisbon Treaty.

The same opinions were expressed when the EU Constitutional Treaty was rejected by French and Dutch voters in 2005.

"The EU worked, is working and will continue to work," Kaczynski said. (dpa)
