Normal life disrupted in Assam over fuel price hike
Guwahati, June 9: Normal life was disrupted in Assam today due to a 12-hour shutdown called by the opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), BJP and Left parties separately to protest against the hike in fuel prices.
According to official sources, there was no report of any untoward incident from any part of the state.
Shops, educational institutions and offices remained closed, while vehicles, both private and public, remained off the roads. Train services were also affected in some places.
The shutdown was total in Guwahati and Upper Assam districts of Dibrugarh, Sibsagar, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Central Assam districts of Nagaon, Morigaon and all Lower Assam districts.
Normal life was also affected in the Hill districts of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills district with the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), Karbi Students Association (KSA) and Karbi Nimso Chingthur Asong (KNCA) extending support to the shutdown.
The Central Government had announced the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel by about ten per cent and a cylinder of cooking gas by 17 per cent, the biggest hike in fuel prices in 12 years.
