Brown says he called on UN to hold "emergency summit" on Myanmar
London - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Wednesday he had called on the United Nations to hold an "emergency summit" over the coordination of international aid supplies to the cyclone victims of Myanmar.
Brown told parliament in London that he hoped the summit would be held "almost immediately" while indicating that Britain would continue to put pressure on countries which had so far blocked a UN Security Council meeting on Myanmar.
"We will not rest in our determination to get a concerted international response," said Brown.
He said there had been an "improvement" in the number of relief planes being allowed in, but the effort was "still not good enough."
His call for an emergency summit was backed by David Cameron, the leader of the Conservative opposition party, who pressed Brown to set a "deadline" after which aid to Myanmar would be enforced. (dpa)
