HPV test better than Pap Smears for Cervical Cancer Detection

Cervical Cancer CellResearch has suggested that the detection of cervical cancer is more accurate using a blood test compared to Pap smears (Papanicolaou test). The study has suggested that HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is found in 95% of cases of development of cervical cancer in cervix. The study published in the New England Journal of Medicine has suggested that individuals should directly go for HPV test instead of Pap smears.

Pap smears test is based on the examination of scraped cells from cervix for abnormal growth. Blood test can easily detect HPV. Sexually transmitted disease HPV is major reason for cervical cancer. Four strains of HPV are commonly found as cause of cervical cancer.

HPV is diagnosed in 11,000 women in United States each year. The STD causes nearly 4000 deaths every year.
The study has also suggested that HPV test is 40 percent more accurate compared to traditional Pap smears test which is being used for diagnosis for past 50 years.

Study co-author Dr. Eduardo Franco said, “We already knew before conducting this study that the sensitivity of the Pap left a lot to be desired.”
