Event for Heart Awareness to be Organized

Cardiovascular problems in health are responsible for annually taking 17.3 million lives across the world, according to data released by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. Cardiovascular problems are the primary cause of death globally. Deaths caused by all forms of cancer are less than the deaths caused by only heart disease and stroke.

Marshall Medical Center and Cameron Park Community Services District have joined hands to organize ‘Affair of the Heart’ event on February 18, 2016 to create awareness about the reasons and steps that can be taken to avoid cardiovascular diseases.

“My goal is for people to gain a better understanding of their own personal risk for heart disease and the ability to recognize which symptoms should prompt them to seek immediate medical attention”, said Dr. Scott Vasconcellos.

He added that heart attacks are more threatening for females because the symptoms are quite different and vague and can therefore be confused for the symptoms of acid reflux, the flu or normal aging. Dr. Vasconcellos stated that heart attack in females does not necessarily involve chest pressure. Symptoms in females include pressure and pain in lower chest or upper abdomen, as well problems in breathing. Other symptoms of heart stroke in women include dizziness, weakness and extreme fatigue.

Certain measures can be taken to avert the risk for heart problems, like regular exercise, healthy diet and reduction in stress, according to Scott Yoder, MD. He added that the avoidance and cure of coronary disease is possible through healthy lifestyle.

In addition, a healthy lifestyle can result in risk reduction of a maximum of 85%, sated Yoder. He also gives recommendation for keeping a track of cholesterol and blood sugar, as well as supervision of blood pressure. Furthermore, obesity and physical inactiveness are primary risk factors for heart diseases that can possibly be prevented.
