Trans-fat associated with Increased Risk of Death from any Cause
A novel research has found that trans-fat is linked to increased risk of death from any reason, including from cardiovascular disease and a diagnosis of coronary heart disease. It is being said that saturated fat is bad but the new study has stated that trans-fat is the culprit.
Researchers from different Canadian institutions, including McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, gathered data from 41 studies that studied the association between saturated fat intake and health outcomes. From these studies, the researchers have covered more than 300,000 people.
Study researchers have also included 20 studies that studied the link between trans-fat and health outcomes that covered more than 200,000. The researchers have found trans-fat to be linked with a 34% increase in all-cause mortality; a 28% increased risk of heart disease mortality and 21% rise in the risk of heart disease.
On the other hand, the researchers have not found saturated fat to be associated with coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, stroke or type-2 diabetes. But its link to risk of death from coronary heart disease was not clear. Therefore, the researchers have called for more study in the matter.
“We have known that trans fats are bad for us, and the evidence for that has been strong enough that these fats are now being removed from the food supply”, affirmed Patty W. Siri-Tarino from Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute.
The US Food and Drug Administration has asked food manufacturers to remove trans fats from the food supply by 2018.
