Decline in usage of Indoor Tanning Beds

As per a study from the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention, a significant decline has come in the usage of tanning beds. Now, fewer Americans have been using the service.

Indoor tanning rates have declined from 5.5% in 2010 to 4.2% in 2013. However, then also around 7.8 million women and 1.9 million continue to use this practice. Study’s lead researcher CDC cancer researcher Gery Guy Jr. was of the view that it is great that a decline has come in indoor tanning. But then also, there are many more people who continue to use the service”.

“While this is a step in the right direction, it is clear that more work is needed to further reduce exposure to UV rays from indoor tanning devices, a known carcinogen”, affirmed Guy.

The study researchers have assessed the data from 59,145 people who have taken part in the National Health Interview Survey. The results found were similar to the 2014 study in which a decline has been found in the use of indoor tanning beds and booths among high schools students.

As per the researchers, a 25% decline has come among girls and almost 7% drop among boys when it comes to using the indoor tanning services. In the case of younger adults, aged between 18 and 29, a drop has come from 11.3% in 2010 to 8.6% in 2013. Rates among women have decreased around 2% and among men, reduction has come to 1.7%.
