Dying Anorexic Woman speaks out about her illness

A California woman suffering from anorexia for a decade posted a Youtube video last month to speak about her disease. Rachael Farrokh, 37 is speaking about her illness with the hope of saving herself and others battling with the same disease.

She once weighed a healthy 125 pounds. However, her weight began to plummet after she began suffering with anorexia. According to a GoFundMe page set up by her husband Rod Edmondson, Farrokh has experienced heart, liver and kidney failure, osteoporosis, blood clots and edema.

According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Only 10% of men and women with eating disorders receive treatment.

According to Dr. Michael Strober, professor of psychiatry and director of the eating disorder program at the UCLA Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, the refeeding process of anorexic people can be extremely risky.

Strober said, Refeeding syndrome results from metabolic changes that are associated with feeding an individual who has been calorie-depleted. So, the feeding needs to be carefully monitored. The refeeding syndrome will involve the body's attempt to adapt to sudden introduction of nutrients".

He added that the metabolic adaptation occurs with a rapid increase of calories, which is associated with a number of life-threatening hazards.

Farrokh posted a photograph with her husband on Facebook. Edmondson said that he's had to quit his job to care for his wife full time.

The couple mentioned that most hospitals and treatment facilities will not take Farrokh as she doesn't meet their minimum weight requirement.

This week Edmondson wrote on Facebook that her wife reads all posts from people for therapy whenever she feels down. He expressed his love for everyone and feels that he is not alone anymore.
