Crews repair broken gas line under Cahuenga Boulevard in Hollywood
On Sunday morning, a broken gas line under Cahuenga Boulevard in Hollywood was repaired. The residents were also told to go back to their homes. According to spokeswoman Anne Silva of the Southern California Gas Company, crews shut off the gas at 4:34 am.
During the night, four large apartment buildings in central Hollywood were evacuated and residents were allowed to go home from a shelter at a recreation center after 8 am. According to Silva, in order to re-establish service to an apartment building at Hollywood Boulevard and Yucca Street, crews have started working.
According to her, “It took a lot of excavation, digging from our crews. They’ve been out there all night”. On Saturday, a 6-inch natural gas line was hit by a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crew.
As per Erik Scott of Los Angeles Fire Department, the incidence took place when they were digging at about 11:30 am at 1776 N. Cahuenga Blvd., on the southwest corner of the intersection of Cahuenga and Yucca Street.
As per DWP spokeswoman Carol Tucker, the markers that showed the location of the line were over three feet off. As per Tucker, a company called Underground Service Alert placed the markers.
Buildings that were evacuated as precautionary steps were surrounded by Franklin Avenue to the north, Ivar Avenue to the east, Wilcox Avenue to the west and Hollywood Boulevard to the south.
There were no reports of fire injury; however a woman suffered from respiratory discomfort. She was taken out of one of the affected buildings. Scott said that she required to be taken to hospital.
A witness told City News Service that motorists driving by on the nearby 101 Freeway were able to smell the natural gas.
