Is Pedialyte a treatment for hangover?

Many drinkers don’t go in for treatment when they suffer a hangover. Now it seems many Americans have found a way to deal with it using a rehydration mixture for children who suffer the effects of diarrhea. Consumption of Pedialyte in adults has increased nearly 60% since 2012. At present adults account for over one-third of the sales for the products i.e. three times the earlier average, according to the manufacturers.

Pedialyte is a mixture of electrolytes and minerals; it is sold as a drink in bottles and also as a powder, which is mixed with water and also a frozen pop-stick form of it is available. Athletes started using it secretly for rehydration. Social media talks regarding its use as a remedy for a hangover. And since it is popular among celebrities, its sales have increased.

According to Pharrell Williams, the music star, he consumes Pedialyte almost every day and Miley Cyrus has been found taking it, with bottle in her hands. Heather Mason, executive vice president of Abbott Laboratories, the manufacturer, told MarketWatch that social media is accountable for spreading this regarding Pedialyte.

According to Ms. Mason, drink consisted of higher electrolyte and lower sugar content compared to common hydration beverages. She added that the company does not look forward to re-naming the product; however it is coming up with larger powdered-stick packs for adults and also adding adult-friendly flavors together with orange and strawberry lemonade.

According to Dr. Robert Glatter, Attending Emergency Room Physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, “Both glucose and fructose contained in Pedialyte can help both children and adults reabsorb water along with depleted electrolytes, and thus aid in rehydration”.
