Kids Watching TV for More Than Four Hours A Day More Likely To Be Obese: Study
A latest research has revealed that kids who watch television for more than four hours a day are more likely to be obese and overweight as compared to children who do not do so.
The study's findings were presented at the annual Pediatric Academic Societies meeting. Researchers during the study followed more than 11,000 children.
The researchers during the study tested several things about kids, including their school life, and found that an average child watched about three hours of TV a day. Parents were also asked to give particular information about their kids.
According to CDC, in past 30 years obesity in kindergartens had become twice than earlier. Researchers suggested that parents must keep a time limit for their children to watch television, and should motivate their kids to play games to keep them active.
Dr. Ben Allan at St. Mary's Women and Family Care in Barboursville said kids imitate what they see, which means that kids are following their parents' behavior.
Dr. Allan says it may sound tough, but parents should cut out TV time as much as possible, or completely.
"That might be something drastic like canceling cable. It might be something like putting strict time limits on it, or matching outdoor activity time with screen time, where you get 15 minutes of screen time if you play outside for an hour", he said.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting TV viewing time at two hours for children, and no screen time for children under two.
Researchers also found no correlation between computer use and increased risk of obesity. However, the study did not look at the effect of other devices such as tablets.
