French Parliament accepts Amendment making it Crime to Use Anorexic Models

France is considered to be one of the most image conscious countries of the world. But now, French authorities are taking action to end the glorification of extremely thin women.

France's parliament has taken a step as per which it would be a crimes to hire anorexic models or encourage anorexia. France is not alone in this initiative as Israel and Spain have already taken these steps.

Though the action would be applicable only on France, it would have a wide impact due to its outsized influence in setting style trends across the world.

"It's not just about protecting the models but also teenagers, because this body-image pressure also affects them and contributes to the emergence of eating disorders and tendencies to eat less and less", affirmed Olivier Veran, a neurologist and legislator who has championed the anorexia measure.

On Friday, the lower house of Parliament accepted the amendment on models, as part of larger health bill. Next week, the bill will be voted and will then go to the Senate. As per the bill, anyone having a body mass index below a certain level would not be allowed to make a living through modeling.

If the law gets passed then the level depending on height and weight will be clearly defined as per decree. Any modeling agency or person found paying a model below the index could face imprisonment of up to six months and
75,000 euros in fine if convicted.

Veran said the idea is not to send people to prison or fine them. The law aims to encourage an idea that the health of people working in the modeling industry is protected. For now, no reaction or comment has come from the French Fashion Federation or French modeling agencies.
