‘He's perfect the way he is’: Alabama mother on baby without nose nasal passage
An Alabama mother delivered a baby without nose nasal passage or sinus cavities in the late afternoon of March.
The child named Eli Thompson weighs 6 pounds and 8 ounces. He is born with a disorder, called complete congenital arhinia. According to the experts, the disorder is so rare that there are only 38 known reported cases of it worldwide.
Baby’s mom Brandi McGlathery told ABC News, "The day I delivered, everything went fine. At 4:42 when he was born, he came out and the doctor put him on my chest. When I took a closer look at him, I said, 'He doesn't have a nose,' and they took him out of the room”.
The baby born with an extremely rare birth defect baffled doctors as his mother's ultrasounds and tests showed no sign of abnormality. Although the baby underwent a tracheotomy to help make breathing and feeding easier, there will be several surgeries in his future.
McGlathery brought Eli home On March 30, and she said he's been doing wonderfully since. She said their normal life isn't going to be the same anymore as they have to change in order to fit with him. She mentioned that her family has received CPR training and has been trained in controlling Eli’s equipment.
She said that when she realized nothing was wrong with him health-wise, she was scared what other people would say. She expressed that she doesn’t want people to make fun of his son and she doesn’t even want others to pity him.
Her baby will have to grow past puberty before his nasal passageways can be rebuilt surgically. However, McGlathery doesn’t any unnecessary facial surgeries for her baby as she thinks that he's perfect the way he is.
