Govt to give more powers to NCW Act
New Delhi, Apr 28 : Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury told the Rajya Sabha today that the Government is planning to give more powers to the National Commission for Women Act.
She said amendment of NCW Act is under consideration. The Government will soon hold a roundtable conference of women's organisations and the associations of men who claim to be "victims" of anti-dowry laws.
Chowdhury said, “1.64 lakh cases of crimes against women were reported in the country in 2006 as against 1.55 lakh cases in the previous year. In 2006, 28,998 cases saw conviction of the accused and the cumulative number of cases pending trial (after including those of previous year) was 5.09 lakh.”
“While bringing change in the Act we will see that men should not just remain the problem but become a part of the solution,” she added. (ANI)
