Intel’s to shut down its Desktop Motherboard business in three years
In a Tuesday disclosure, chip giant Intel said that it intends shuttering down its Desktop Motherboard business in the coming three years, and that the Haswell motherboards will be the last of the desktop motherboard offerings from the company.
According to the announcement made internally by Intel, the development of any new desktop motherboard solutions will be stopped towards the later part of 2013; with the Desktop Motherboard group to be completely shut down in three years' time.
However, Intel also added alongside that it will continue supplying chipsets to third parties, but will discontinue the development of its own desktop motherboards once it is through with the launch of Haswell. The company also said that it will continue to support product warranties for their duration, in spite of the eventual shutdown of its Desktop Motherboard business.
Intel said that the decision to gradually wind up its desktop mainboards business has come in the wake of the fact that the company plans to shift its focus on developing mainboards for the emerging PC form-factors.
As per the company's internal disclosure about gradually ramping down its Desktop Motherboard business "over the course of the next three years," Intel said that it is in the process of "ramping up critical areas of the desktop space including integration of innovative solutions for the PC ecosystem such as reference design development, NUC and other areas to be discussed later."
