200,000 UK households facing risks of eviction and repossession
According to the latest figures released, a total number of about 200,000 households in the UK are facing the risk of eviction and repossession.
Charity, Shelter said that over 200,000 households faced the risk of losing their homes during the previous one year. Figures showed that the 15 worst affected areas, where one in every 62 homes is facing the risk, were all in the British capital, London.
The charity said that most claims were from landlords that were seeking evictions from tenants. The latest figures were released by the Ministry of Justice on mortgage and landlord possession claims. 198,470 households in England were under threat between October 2011 and September 2012.
Barking and Dagenham in east London were the places where people were facing the highest risk of eviction. About one in 37 homes in the area were facing risks of eviction, which is about three times the national average.
Outside the capital, Wolverhampton recorded the highest level of risks with one in 65 households facing risks of eviction. Slough and Manchester were just below Wolverhampton with one in 66 families under threat of eviction and repossession.
A Shelter spokeswoman said, "For people who have really stretched themselves to get a mortgage, having their hours reduced by 10 to 15 hours a week means they can't make ends meet."
