Google confirms it is acquiring mobile facial recognition firm Viewdle
According to a recent CNET report, Google's Motorola Mobility subsidiary has confirmed the rumors that it is acquiring Viewdle - the startup which specializes in mobile facial-recognition and augmented-reality (AR) technology.
Despite the fact that the terms of Google's Viewdle acquisition deal remained undisclosed, a Motorola Mobility spokesperson - describing Ukraine-based Viewdle as a "leading imaging & gesture recognition company" - revealed to CNET that Motorola and Viewdle "have an existing commercial agreement," and also added that the two companies "have been collaborating for some time."
With Motorola's Viewdle acquisition seemingly in the works for over one year now, a CNET report on Monday had said that Motorola was already in negotiations with Viewdle when Google acquired Motorola last year.
The report also mentioned that Google was nearing the close of a takeover deal for Viewdle; with the transaction likely to be completed this week. Though the financial terms of the transaction remain officially undisclosed, it is being estimated that the price Google will be paying for Viewdle will be towards the high end of a $30-$45 million range.
In the opinion of the industry-watchers, the Viewdle acquisition by Google is clearly a strategic move by the Internet search giant, especially since the Viewdle technology facilitates the users of some popular services - like Google+, Android, Picasa, on different devices - in tagging the photos of their friends!
