India’s PC sales rise 16 per cent in 2011-12, report
According to a new report, the sales of notebook and desktop computers rose by 16 per cent in the Indian market during the 2011-12 financial year, according to the latest report by Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology (MAIT).
The sales of personal computers (PCs) grew by 16 per cent to cross 10.8 million, however it was much below 11.8 million units projected by the analysts. About 9.3 million PCs were sold in the country during 2010-11 and the PC market is expected to grow at 15% to reach 12.4 million units during 2012-13.
MAIT President Alok Bhardwaj said, "The industry experienced a very nervous business environment in 2011-12. The year was plagued by problems like hard disk shortage and inflation, besides weakening of the rupee."
He said that the association had projected a growth of 26 per cent for 2011-12 but factors including foreign currency fluctuations and natural calamities in Thailand and Japan, which disrupted supply chains, resulted in a fall in sales in the country.
Desktops accounted for 6.7 million units sold in the country while notebooks and netbooks stood at 3.7 million units and 0.28 million units, respectively, according to estimates. The consumer segment accounted for 55 per cent of the total sales while the remaining 45 per cent was from enterprise buyers.
