RIM to acquire Ireland's NewBay developer
Canada based, Research In Motion (RIM), the maker of popular BlackBerry family of smartphones, is set to take over Irish mobile software maker NewBay developer for an unannounced price.
The developer creates photo, video and social-networking tools fro several devices. Even as the company has not announced the pricing details of the deal, the amount is believed to be about $100 million, according to a report by Reuters.
The NewBay, which is based in Dublin, is a leading provider of cloud-based photo, video and social-networking tools for smartphones and computers and has more than 80 million subscribers for its content services.
The develop offers deals through Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom, At&T and Verizon.
Analysts believe that the Canadian telecommunications giant can use NewBay's tools to develop its content business. Both the companies have not commented on the deal but a Reuters report suggests that the deal is yet to be finalized.
RIM is struggling against rival including Apple and Google's Android in the smartphone markets and its tablet has not managed to attract a great number of users. Investors are concerned about falling share prices, delayed products as well as the loss of market share.
