Windows Mobile Marketplace crosses 30,000 apps
The Windows Mobile Marketplace now boasts of more than 30,000 apps in its offering, which is not a big compared to hundreds of thousands offered by rival Apple's App store and Google Android Marketplace, but displays an upward movement in Microsoft's own app store.
Microsoft is betting big on its Windows Mobile platform and has convinced Nokia, which was until recently the world's biggest handset maker to use the Windows Mobile platform on its upcoming smartphones. One of the biggest challenge for the company is attracting developers to create a wide variety of apps for the users, as apps are now an important aspect supporting smartphones.
Interestingly, the company's collection has grown faster than Android, which took 512 days to hit 30,000 apps. The growth has slowed down possibly due to Mango and restrictions placed by Microsoft on spam.
Out of the total, about 47 per cent are free of cost 20 per cent have trials and 33 per cent are paid. Games account for just 17 per cent of the apps while books and reference account for 14 per cent.
