Microsoft will ask Hotmail users to choose stronger passwords
Software giant, Microsoft will make Hotmail users have strong, less apparent passwords for their email accounts in order to fight spamming and hackers.
The company said in a blog post that users creating a new account will not be allowed to choose a password typically used by millions of others. Users who are already using a banned password will be asked to change it in the future, according to Dick Craddock, group program manager for Hotmail.
"This new feature will be rolling out soon, and will prevent you from choosing a very common password when you sign up for an account or when you change your password," he wrote.
Security experts say that users generally use very simple and easy to use passwords such as the brand of their monitors. The hackers are aware of hundreds of commonly used passwords and they use the information to try and hack into email accounts for spamming and other activities.
