Ex-CJI Balakrishnan under CBI Radar
Country's first schedule caste Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan who is currently working as a Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is again in news over his disproportionate assets.
CBI, country's premier investigation agency, has been waiting for the approval of Registrar-General of the Supreme Court for initiating probe into his assets. It is required to get nod of Registrar for initiating probe against any sitting or former judge of Supreme Court.
A Delhi based journalist has lodged complaint against the former CJI with the office of Vice-President Office alleging that he has amassed property worth billions despite having limited sources of income. The Vice- President's office acted swiftly by forwarding the complaint to the Union Home Ministry which allowed CBI probe into the matter.
A CBI source said, "We have received the complaint but no investigation has been launched. It will be launched only after getting an official nod. The Supreme Court Registrar-General is the competent authority to give sanction for the probe."
Ex-CJI's daughter K B Sony and her husband P V Sreenijin also said to have amassed assets disproportionate to their assets. She declared assets just Rs 25,000 in the affidavit filed in the 2006 Assembly polls but she now owns prime property worth crores in many cities.
