On Friday, the telecom regulator, TRAI said that it is going recommend of linking the one-time extra charge for holding extra 2G with the prices of 3G within the next two-three weeks time.

As of now, the operators are expected to pay an extra fee if they are holding 2G spectrum more than they require.

TRAI said that it is recommending the linking since it wants to make the telecom service sector a more level playing ground for the players.

Talking to media, TRAI Chairman J S Sarma said, "When we gave our recommendations to the government in May 2010 we had said that we are studying the issue (linking 2G price with 3G price). We have not asked for any extension. We expect to give recommendations in two-three week."

Most of the players are against the interlinking of 2G and 3G spectrum prices and pay anything extra beyond 6.5 MHz.

This kind of recommendation has also called for a change in the TRAI Act 1997 and the regulator is ready for that thing to happen.

The changes will also remove the inconsistency in qualification of Chairman and other members as well.
