According to Jason Garrett-Glaser, the digital video expert who claims that Google's VP8 codec isn't ready for prime time.
The trade analysts state that this codec is a slow, buggy and closely resemble to H. 264. "VP8, as an encoder, is somewhere between Xvid and Microsoft's VC-1 in terms of visual quality. And VP8, as a decoder, decodes even slower than ffmpeg's H. 264," claims Garret.
It was further elucidated that it basically has a C code copy-pasted from the VP8 source code and includes TODOs, 'optimizations,' and even C-specific hacks.
It nowhere is in competition with either H. 264 Main or High Profile.
Meanwhile the trade experts also state that this codec is not yet ready to be released in the market and runs short on specs.
