Indian hockey team faces new captaincy crisis

HockeyWeeks before the biggest tournament in the sport of hockey is to begin in India, the national hockey team is facing another crisis. The team is divided between two candidates for the captainship.

The Hockey World cup is to begin in New Delhi and the captaincy crisis is expected to be resolved on Tuesday. Hockey India and the players are yet again finding it hard to make common decisions.

While Hockey India has proposed the name of Rajpal Singh for the post of captain in the world cup the players and coach Jose Brasa are backing Prabhjot to lead the team.

The coach had promised the captainship to Prabjot and the players also support the player who led them in the revolt against the federation. On the other hand, Rajpal Singh had captained the Indian team in the Champions League.

A similar situation had arisen during the Mexico Olympics in 1968 when the Indian team was led jointly by Gurbux Singh and Prithipal Singh. India had lost its title in that tournament and did not reach the final for the first time.

It is to be seen now if the crisis would be resolved and the players would concentrate on the tournament.
