OECD jobless rate climbs to 8.6 per cent in August Paris - Despite an easing of the economic crisis, joblessness in the 30 member nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) rose to 8.6 per cent in August, the organization said Monday.

This represented a jump of 0.1 per cent from July and 2.3 per cent over one year, the OECD said.

In the United States, the jobless rate stood at 9.8 per cent in August, a rise of 3.6 per cent in one year.

Japan's unemployment rate fell to 5.5 per cent in August, down 0.2 per cent from the previous month.

In the euro area, joblessness stood at 9.6 per cent, up 0.1 per cent over July and 2 per cent higher than August 2008.

Most experts have forecast a worsening of the labour market in most countries even as their economies recover from the worst economic crisis in more than 50 years. (dpa)
