We can’t walk away from Afghanistan, says Brown
London, Sep. 5 : Following defence aide Eric Joyce quitting over UK’s war strategy in Afghanistan, Gordon Brown tried to defend his policy by saying that “we cannot walk away.”
Despite the growing death toll among British troops, Brown insisted the UK strategy in Afghanistan is the right one.
“A safer Britain requires a safer Afghanistan,” the Daily Star quoted Brown, as saying.
In a rambling speech, Brown said British troops would not pull out until the country was able to police itself.
“We cannot walk away,” admitting that it was vital to speed up the removal of the Taliban and the “Afghanization” of the country.
Avoiding giving any definite idea of when the British troops might be called back, he said the conflict was not Britain’s alone but an international mission.
Meanwhile, Lance Corporal Richard Brandon and Private Gavin Elliott became the latest British soldiers to be killed in Afghanistan. (ANI)
