Jai Bhagwan advances in WBC
Asian silver medalist Jai Bhagwan has made into the second round of the 60kg bout weight category of the World Boxing Championship (WBC) in Milan, Italy. Bhagwan thumped Venezuela's Angel Rodrigues as Indian fans got something to cheer about on the second day of the event.
Bhagwan was under immense pressure before the start of the match as three Indian boxers had already crashed out of the tournament. But the Haryana boxer seemed unaffected by it as he punched-out his opponent 10-4 in the first round match.
Bhagwan took lead in the first round of match 3-1, and he blanked out his opponent in the second round as he enhanced his lead to 7-1. The final round ended with 3 points each as Bhagwan ensured his berth in next round.
Bhagwan will now meet Irish team co-captain Eric Donovan in the second round. Eric ousted Bakhodir Karimov of Kyrgyzstan 13-4 in the first round.
Akhil Kumar, quarterfinalist of Beijing Olympic, will start his campaign today in 57 kg category while Nanao Singh Thokchom will play his first 48 kg bout.
