Turkish minister in Cairo for talks on Iraq-Syria tension

Turkish minister in Cairo for talks on Iraq-Syria tensionCairo  - Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu arrived in Cairo on Wednesday for a meeting with Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak, the official MENA news agency reported.

Davutoglu is expected to meet with Egypt's intelligence chief Omar Suleiman on Thursday as well as get together with Egyptian journalists, opinion leaders and representatives of non-governmental organizations.

On Wednesday, Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa said that he had invited Davutoglu to attend the Arab foreign ministers' meeting in Cairo next week to discuss the growing tensions between Syria and Iraq.

"There is no competition between me and Davutoglu, but things must be managed wisely," said Moussa, when asked if Turkey's mediation would affect the Arab League's role in the Syrian-Iraqi problem.

Davutoglu was shuttling between Iraq and Syria last week in an attempt to mend growing tension between the two countries following Iraqi charges that Damascus was giving sanctuary to militants.

"There is a lot of cooperation between us and Turkey, and any effort Turkey exerts to solve the problems of its neighbours, particularly Iraq and Syria, adds to the Arab effort," Moussa told reporters.

Last week, Iraq recalled its ambassador to Syria and demanded the Syrian government hand over former senior Baath party members for their alleged role in recent deadly truck bombings in Baghdad.

A few hours later Syria recalled its ambassador to Iraq, and a foreign ministry statement said Damascus "categorically rejects the statement of the spokesman of the Iraqi government regarding the bloody attacks in Baghdad." (dpa)
