Sania advances to second round of US Open
Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza has stormed into the second round of the women's singles event of the US Open after defeating Olga Govortsova of Belarus in the first round at the Flushing Meadows hard-courts on Monday.
Sania, world no. 74, ousted Olga in a three setter match 6-2 3-6 6-3 to move to next round of the last Grand Slam of the year. Sania will now play against 10th seeded Flavia Pennettaof Italy in the second round.
In men's singles event, India's no 1 Somdev Devvarman won his first round match against Portugal's Frederico Gil to set up clash with 23rd seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in the second round. Somdev, world no. 162, defeated Gil in straight sets 6-3 6-4 6-3.
Somdev has won US college champion twice and he has performed exceptionally well in past few months. Somdev reached into the final of the Chennai Open earlier this year and now he made into the main draw of Grand Slam after winning three qualifying matches.
