The four-time world champion in women’s boxing MC Mary Kom has been likely to receive the country's highest sporting honor, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, as her name has been recommended by the award selection committee on Monday.
 
A senior official of the committee said that the award selection committee has collectively voted for Mary Kom, and her name has been recommended to the Sports Ministry, which would confirm in the next few days.
 
Overjoyed by the news, Kom said that she has been extremely happy to hear this news as earlier also her name was discussed on two occasions, but both time they rejected it which encouraged her to work even harder.

The officials said that Beijing Olympics bronze medalist Vijender Singh and wrestling's Olympic bronze medalist Sushil Kumar were also considered as an option but Kom’s achievement in the boxing arena was selected as the best performance by the committee.
