Greenpeace warns of 'striking change in monsoon patterns' due to global warming
Just a day ahead of the World Environment Day, the eco-warriors of Greenpeace unrolled a gigantic banner addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Vashi on Thursday. The 80-foot-long banner saying – "Dr Manmohan Singh, Save Our Monsoons'' – was hung from Vashi bridge.
The Greenpeace environmental activists say that through the huge banner, they are requesting the Prime Minister of India to take some serious steps regarding climate change. The Greenpeace volunteers feel that India must have effective climate policy, which should be presented at The Climate Summit in Copenhagen later this year.
The Greenpeace environmentalists warn that the global warming could bring striking change in monsoon patterns. The Greenpeace paper – `Monsoon wager: Climate change and Indian monsoon' – the climate change could result in increasing the monsoon rain by 20 percent, which could be disastrous.
According to the Greenpeace study, the striking change in monsoon patterns could have adverse social and economic consequences in India, as the lives of the majority of people including farmers, urban jobbers and businessmen, and the people trading on the Mumbai Sensex, significantly depend on the monsoon.
