Alcohol could be cause of increasing waistline

Alcohol could be cause of increasing waistline A recent study revealed that many people don’t know about the calorie content of alcohol. The research conducted by the Department of Health carried was based on the data collected from 2,000 adults in England.

42% women during Government's Know Your Limits campaign said they had no idea that a glass of white wine had the same calories as a bag of crisps. Survey showed that 40% men were unaware that a pint of lager had as many calories as a sausage roll.

Findings indicated that 62 % drinkers often take unhealthy breakfast after a heavy drinking which contributes in extra calories.

Data showed that a regular beer drinker who had five pints a week or 250 in a year had same amount of calorie intake as a person eating 221 doughnuts in 12 months. An average wine drinker consumes 2,000 calories each month.

29% people revealed during study that they ordered crisps, nuts or pork scratchings to accompany their drinks, while 19% regularly grabbed a takeaway in the form of pizza, burger, a bag of chips or kebab.

Health minister Phil Hope said: "It's not only the calories in the drinks themselves that can help to pile on the pounds, we're also more likely to eat fatty foods when we've had one too many."

Heather Caswell, of the British Nutrition Foundation, added: "Most people would baulk at consuming a full glass of single cream, but wouldn't think twice about a couple of pints."
